These Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos are made with all healthy ingredients so you can feel good about feeding them to your kids!
I really, really love chips. In fact, that might be an understatement, the truth is that I’m a chip fanatic and I can’t be trusted in a room alone with a bag of chips. I actually think it has crossed over into the realm of chip addiction. No matter what kind of chips, as long as they are crunchy and salty I will devour them, so you better get your own bag. I can’t count the number of times my husband has said to me, “Are all the chips really gone? Didn’t we just buy that bag yesterday?”. Opps! But, thankfully I can feel good about eating lots of these Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos
Growing up, my mother was pretty deep into health food and while I got my fill of corn chips and salsa, we never kept a stock of exciting chips in the house, like sour cream and onion potato chips or nacho cheese Doritos. It’s not that I was denied them completely, but when I did get them it was considered a treat.
Healthy Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos
My version of Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos are made with corn tortillas, olive oil and lots of flavorful spices! I also use nutritional yeast to give them a nice cheesy flavor but also keeping them vegan. These chips are also baked in the oven and don’t require much oil at all.
These days I survive mostly on corn chips dipped in guacamole or salsa, but today I was really craving some good old fashioned Doritos. While I do love a classic Nacho Cheese Dorito, spring is in the air and I wanted something with a little more zing to it, so I decided on Cool Ranch Doritos. I convinced myself that if i made them at home, from scratch, it would be ok for me to eat all of them without feeling any guilt.
Check out exactly how I make these Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos below!

Description
These Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos are made with healthy ingredients so you can feel good about feeding them to your kids!
Ingredients
- 8 corn tortillas
- 1 – 2 tablespoons olive oil, or canola oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoon nutritional yeast
- 3/4 teaspoons paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried chives
- 1 teaspoon dried dill
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Brush both sides of each tortilla with olive oil and then cut into sixths. Spread tortilla chips out on a large baking sheet and back for about 12 minutes, flipping once. You may have to bake in two batches if you have a smaller baking sheet.
- Mix all spices together in a small bowl. Once tortilla chips are finished baking, place them in a large paper bag or plastic tupperware. Add the seasoning mix and shake until all chips are coated. Enjoy!
Notes
*You may have to brush some additional olive oil over the chips once they are finished baking to ensure that the seasoning mix sticks to them.
Recipe makes enough chips for 2-3 people, recipe is easily doubled or tripled if desired.

When I eat chips, I do this thing that drives my husband crazy. I look into the bag and inspect each chip to make sure I am getting one with lots of seasoning on it. Does anyone else ever do that or am I completely weird?! I think I just found the best chip!

Hi
What brush should I use to brush the tortillas?

a pasty brush would work great!

Super excited to try these for my daughter who is on a very restrictive diet and hates missing out on “regular” (but full of nasty stuff) food. Any suggestion for what to use in place of corn tortillas? My daughter can’t do corn or gluten. I’ve been making my own gluten free burritos but they’re not that impressive so I’m not sure how they’d do baking after I do them on the stovetop. Could I use a store bought tortilla chip (they’re quinoa and rice) and add seasoning to them? Thanks for any help!

HI Carol! I think it might work if you use store-bought tortilla chips! I’d just give them a spritz of oil and then toss them with the seasonings and they should stick! I hope your daughter enjoys them π
Carol says
These were delicious! Since my daughter can’t do corn or gluten, I used a pre-made rice/quinoa tortilla chips, sprayed with a little bit of olive oil and shook in a bag with seasonings. Just used less salt and they were perfect!! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Yah!! I’m so glad it worked out and that she enjoyed them! <3

Is it alright to put the seasoning on the chips before putting them in the oven or even, applying the seasoning then going in for one last bake with the chips covered?
Also, I wanted to know if using canola or olive oil was a strict rule or if something else like coconut oil would be okay as well.
My apologies if I missed anything, I sort of have a habit of skimming through these things especially because I’m in the habit of wanting to add in my own substitutions if applicable.
Thanks again

Yeah, I think it would work ok to add the seasoning before cooking, you just don’t want the seasoning to get burnt at all. You can definitely use coconut oil!

What purpose does the yeast serve in the recipe and is it really necessary?
She Likes Food says
It gives is a cheesy taste. You definitely don’t have to use it but I do enjoy the flavor it gives π

The spice mixture is delicious! I ended up using it with rice, too! Iβm having trouble getting my tortilla chips crispy, though. Theyβre still pretty chewy. Any tips?

That’s awesome!! My chips seemed to crisp up more if I let them sit for a few minutes once I took them out of the over, but if that doesn’t work I’d recommend baking them for another minute or so π

I read your post and I thought you were talking about me. I love chips-anything salty and crunchy. I recently found a brand of tortilla chips I’ve nick-named “crack” because I can eat the whole bag in one sitting. Not sure I can name them but they are Late July Jalepeno Lime.
I will definitely make your cool ranch and lime chips.

They usually crisp up if I let them sit for a few minutes once I take them out of the oven. I’m sorry they were Chewy!

I for sure will be trying this, because I too am a chip freak…..in fact all you wrote, including the checking out the chips in the bag, sounds so familiar that I wondered if I wrote it. LOL Anyway I can’t wait to try these, and possibly eat them all myself.

Hello!
I had such high expectations for this recipe.. fresh out of the oven they tasted pretty good. I put them in a bag for enjoyment later. When I retried one a couple hours later, they were hard as a rock and chewy (hard to believe right). Did I do something wrong? Are these only to be enjoyed fresh?
Thanks!!

Hi Kelsey, sorry they didn’t hold up. In my experience freshly baked chips usually get a little tougher if you let them sit a while. I’ll add that into the recipe notes π
Emily Wright says
Hey me and my friend are making these chips for a class project and we need the nutritional facts of these delicious chips. you know like the thing on everything that includes serving sizes and calories. By the way the chips are truly great and fun to make

Hi Emily, unfortunately I don’t have the nutritional information on hand but I believe there are some websites out there where you can input the ingredients and it will configure it for you, myfitnesspal.com is one of them. So glad you both liked the chips!
Ms Michelle Grant says
Could I sprinkle the uncooked chips with the spices before cooking so they would cling better to the chips, or would this be yucky?
She Likes Food says
Hi Michelle, You could do that, but the spices will get a cooked a little bit and change their flavor slightly. You could also try spraying the cooked chips with a little bit more olive oil so the spices stick a little better π

These are amazing! Great recipe and super easy to get right the first time. Seasoning sticks well after baking it. Won’t be buying Doritos anymore! Thanks for sharing the spice mix. Any others you’ve tried? My favourite is Mexicana, but I have no clue what spices to use. Thanks.

Thank you so much, Emma! I’m so glad you liked them!! I haven’t made a Mexicana one before but I love all things Mexican so maybe I should work on that next! I’m already dreaming of all the spices I could use π
Jennifer says
How important is the nutritional yeast? I’ve looked everywhere and have not been able to find it
She Likes Food says
Hi Jennifer, I’m sorry you couldn’t find any nutritional yeast! It gives the chips a slightly cheesy taste, but I think they would still taste great without it!
