Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean veggie burger season is over! These Easy Vegan Black Bean Burgers are so good that we make them all year round. You only need a few simple ingredients, but they’re packed with flavor and hold together nicely.
It can be tough to get a homemade veggie burger to have good texture. Some are too soft, and some are too crumbly. These vegan black bean burgers are perfectly soft but hold their shape. And they’ve been approved by vegans and meat-eaters alike!
Why Your Body Will Love These Quinoa and Bean Burgers
- Protein – Quinoa is an excellent protein source vital for muscle health and satiety. It contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein.
- Digestive Health – Quinoa is a great source of fiber, helping us feel full longer, smoothing the digestive process, and carrying toxins out of our systems. Beans are high in insoluble fiber, which helps bulk up the digestive system and prevent constipation. The fiber in beans also acts as a prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria in the large intestine and carries out toxins.
- Blood Sugar Regulation β Beans, high in fiber as well as protein, have a glycemic index. This means they digest slowly and donβt cause blood sugar levels to spike or rise too quickly. This makes beans a healthy choice for people with diabetes who need to control their blood sugar levels more.
What You’ll Need To Make These Vegan Burgers
- Quinoa – I use cooked quinoa in my burgers because I like the taste and texture, and it’s quick and easy to make. You can, however, use your favorite cooked grain.
- Black Beans – I just use one can of black beans and it’s super easy! If using homemade, use 1 1/2 cups.
- Salsa – I use chunky salsa because it adds flavor, makes them nice and moist, and is an easy shortcut to add a few veggies in there without having to cook them!
- Breadcrumbs – I used Panko crumbs, but any breadcrumb will work, even gluten-free.
- Spices – The spices help give these burgers a great flavor. I use cumin, paprika, smoked paprika, garlic, and onion powder. The smoked paprika gives them a nice off-the-grill flavor.
How To Make These Vegan Veggie Patties
As the name states, these are really easy to make. There are just a few steps:
- Add all ingredients to a food processor. Process for 45-60 seconds until all ingredients are blended together but still a little bit chunky.
- Transfer the mixture to a medium-sized bowl and refrigerate for about ten minutes. Remove from the refrigerator and form the mixture into patties. Depending on the size you make them, you will get about 4-6 patties. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper and place the black bean burgers on it. Refrigerate for about 20 minutes.
- Heat a large pan over medium heat and coat the bottom with olive oil. Cook the burgers on each side for 3-5 minutes until crisp and hot. Top with your favorite burger toppings and enjoy!
Veggie Burger Frequently Asked Questions
- Can you grill them? Yes! If grilling, I recommend forming them into patties and then chilling them in the refrigerator for an hour or so to ensure they hold together well on the grill.
- Can I use rice instead of quinoa? You can! Any cooked grain will work well.
- Mine are falling apart. What did I do wrong? If you followed the recipe exactly and they’re still falling apart, I suggest adding a little more salsa and breadcrumbs and chilling the mixture for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
- Can I add extra veggies to my black bean burgers? Yes! Just watch the texture and add extra breadcrumbs or salsa if needed.
- Can I use a bean other than black beans? Yes, any kind of bean will work in these burgers.
- What should I top them with? I like to go Southwestern with my toppings since the burgers have a Southwest flavor, but anything you like is good! I like lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, jalapeΓ±os, ketchup, mustard, cheese, etc.
Have a question I didn’t answer? Ask me in the comments, and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Thank you so much, Danielle!
Happy one year, Izzy! Hard to believe, eh? Blink! Fav ingredient: Coconut Oil and Olive Oil (I have two, okay?).
This is a fabulous giveaway,Izzy, but please don’t enter me to win. I have the veg flavor bible and it is an amazing resource for people who love to eat and cook!
This burger!!! It is so tall and you’ve got so many delicious ingredients in it and on it! Nice work! I am looking forward to hearing about your work with a GF magazine! You’re doing great! Keep at it!
Traci! Thank you! I know, it seems like just yesterday I had no idea how to use my camera, haha! I so love both of those ingredients too! I just started using coconut oil recently and I’m really enjoying it! Isn’t it such a great book?! I pretty much use it on a daily basis and it gives me such good inspirations!
You really do need this burger! My husband even loved them and he is a huge meat eater, and as you know, pretty picky! Although, whenever I make sweet potato fries, he always asks “where are the regular fries?” Someday I’ll get him over to the sweeter side π
Well, I was going to leave a comment anyway, but knowing it gets me a giveaway entry is even more incentive! π
First of all, congratulations!! It has been such a pleasure reading your blog this year and watching your skills grow. I did click back to revisit that first post, and you’re right– while it looked pretty good then, your photos (and writing) have made huge improvements! I read several food blogs and yours is definitely one of my favorites- and not just because I know you!
Second- I can’t wait to try these burgers. Yum!!
Last, favorite ingredient? Currently, I’m OBSESSED with goat cheese. And sweet potatoes. Oh man, I’ve had a lot of good things lately, but I’ll stick with those two!
Thank you so much, Savanah!! That makes me so happy that you enjoy reading my blog, because from what I see on facebook, you are quite the cook too! Especially with all those delicious desserts! I remember showing Faune my first post and she mentioned that I probably would want to write more eventually, haha! I guess she was right!
I’m so obsessed with goat cheese too!! For some reason I used to hate it, but now I could eat it on everyting! Especially sweet potatoes! Thank you so much for your comment π
Me too! I used to think goat cheese was the worst ever! Then I worked at a nice restaurant, and one of our most popular salads was an arugula with sherry walnut vinaigrette and goat cheese fritters, and it was SOOO good. Then, more recently, my doctor had me off dairy for a while but said goat cheese was ok. I finally bought some on day 4, and it hit the creamy cheesy spot that I’d been so desperate to fill. I’ve been hooked ever since!
I love cooking with sweet potatoes! And avocados. Preferably together! Thanks for the giveaway.
Hi Ashley! I think we might be the same person! Sweet potatoes and avocados are one of my favorite combinations ever!!
Yay, happy happy blog anniversary Izzy! So glad to hear your following your dreams and it’s opening up so many great adventures for you:) Love these black bean burgers , they look amazing especially with those sweet potato chips stacked inside!
Thank you so much, Kelly! It really has been such a fun time! A little stressful at times, but mostly awesome π
I love black beans. They are so versatile and I’ve even put them into brownies before!
Hi Becca! I have yet to try the black bean brownies, but I love them in everything else so I think I need to try them soon π
I won’t enter the competition as I’ve already got the Flavour Bible (love it, too!) but Congrats for reaching a full year of blogging! I’ve certainly enjoyed following along for a good part of that year and will definitely look forward to seeing what you come up with in your second year of blogging! Oh, and thanks for the bb burger recipe …
P.S. Oh, even tho I’m not entering the comp I’ll tell you what my fave ingredient to cook with is anyway … tomatoes! I know, might sound boring, but they’re so versatile and tasty!
Isn’t it awesome, Helen?! Thank you so much! I’m so glad that I have met you through blogging and that makes me so happy that you enjoy reading along!
Tomatoes are one of my favorites too! So versatile and so delicious!! π
I got that book for my birthday! It is fantastic! So much good information packed inside and these burgers look amazing! Yum!
Isn’t is too good and inspiring?! I pretty much use it on a daily basis!
I’m no vegan and I cannot eat beans but these look seriously tasty! π
Haha! I probably shouldn’t eat as many beans as I do, but I just can’t help myself π
Well happy blogiversary to you my friend! It’s been so fun following along and becoming internet friends : ) These black bean burgers sound delicious! And I love those BBQ sweet potato chips on top. Yum! This is making me miss summer just a little bit : )
Thank you so much, Natalie!! I’m so happy to have met you too and I think it would be so fun to get together someday and enjoy a big glass of wine π
Issy, Issy!! Happy blog anniversary! When you starting this I was so impressed and inspired and I continue to feel that way.
Your blogs are always fun, and your photos are beautiful. Plus, I’ve been meaning to tell you that I made the chicken pot pie from way back in the blog as a date activity a month or so ago and it was fun and delicious, so thank for that too. So glad to have you as a friend.
Oh, and my favorite ingredient to use right now… for work is yogurt, and for cooking at home is onions.
Sho!!! Aww, thank you so much! That pot pie is one of my favorites! Eric is always requesting it, so I think I need to make it again soon too! Also, I need to hear more about this date activity that you speak of! My mom mentioned something to that effect about you π I’m so glad to have you as a friend as well and think we are far due for a catch up!
Yogurt and onions are two ingredients that I always make sure are well stocked π
Mmm this burger looks delicious and with those chips!!!! No way!!!
Congrats on your anniversary and all your success in your first year! Your recipes are great and I fell in love with your blog the first time I landed on your page!
My favourite ingredient to cook with is……oh jeeze…now I’m thinking…there’s too many!! π Can I give you three….cayenne pepper, olive oil and coconut butter. That was hard! π
Thank you so much, Karen! I’m so happy to hear that you love my blog, that just makes me so happy π Haha, definitely too many to choose from, but I love all your choices! π
Congrats on your own year anniversary! It’s always a good thing when you get to see how far you’ve come with blogging. So exciting :). And I absolutely love this black bean burger. And I’m not a black bean burger type of person lol. Very nice post
Thank you! It is kinda crazy to see how things have changed, but also crazy to think that I still have so much more to learn! My husband is a huge meat eater, but has requested these on more than one occasion! I know the recipe is a winner when he loves it π
Please stop posting these burgers. I want one right now, even though it’s just 9am!!
Happy blog-iversary!
My favorite ingredient? Well, butter, of course. Cream, if I’m in a fix. π
Haha! Maybe you can crumble one into some eggs and have it for breakfast! Thank you so much!
Both amazing choices! When I was a little kid I used to drink the little creamer containers from McDonalds π
Congratulations on one year of blogging, Izzy! That is so exciting! I’m so glad you’re following your dreams, especially with your photography goals! This black bean burger looks amazing! And I especially love that you piled your sweet potato chips onto it. Such a creative touch! Yum!
Thank you, Gayle!! It is hard to believe it has been a whole year, and I still have so much more to learn, haha! Sweet potato chips make everything better!
going to give this a try!
I hope you enjoy them π
Cilantro…..love it’s freshness
I love cilantro too! I just had a bunch in a burrito for dinner tonight π
Congratulations on your one-year anniversary! I can’t believe it’s already been a whole year ! I was looking back at some of your old posts, and it seems like your photography has really come a long way since you started your blog (even though way-back-when I thought those first photos were pretty awesome)! I must admit, your gorgeous photos make me want to try every recipe you post, even when I know it’s something I don’t normally like! I’m really proud of you for finding a way to combine your love of food and photography and then going for it! I know it’s been a lot of fun but also a lot of work.
I was already planning on leaving a comment before I saw the giveaway, but because that cookbook looks so awesome: I think my favorite ingredient to cook with is fresh tomatoes! I tend to throw them into a lot of things I make. And my second favorite ingredient is probably sugar since it’s essential to so very very many baked goods – haha!
Thank you, Amy!! I can’t believe it has been a whole year either, kinda crazy. I don’t even want to think about all the money I’ve spent on the blog this year, lol! Haha, I thought some of my first pictures were pretty awesome too, lol! I still do like some of them, just not all of them π It definitely has been a lot of work, but I’m hoping it pays off eventually, and it is a lot more fun than the work I actually get paid for so I guess it all evens out!
Tomatoes are one of my favorites too! Can you believe that I have a cherry tomato plant that is still producing tomatoes right now?! Haha, I tried to make a baked good without using any sugar a few weeks ago and it was not very good! I miss you guys! Thanks so much for commenting π
This black bean burger topped with the sweet potato chips looks insanely good. Don’t enter me into the giveaway, but I have so many favorite ingredients. Brussels sprouts and persimmons are a seasonal favorite at the moment – tamarind paste in another. And congratulations Izzy on all of your successes this past year. You put it well and I agree that blogging is such a creative and fulfilling project, and I wish you continued success and fulfillment in the years to come. π
Thank you so much, Katie!! Brussels sprouts are an all time favorite of mine and I’ve really been wanting to cook with persimmons lately. I’m guessing they will become a favorite too! I need to start with your brussels sprout and persimmon roasted veg π
I love sweet potato, yum !!!
Me too, Robyn! They are one of my favorites!
Garlic in everything savory!
I 100% agree with you, Doug!!
You have so many comments and facebook likes already; it shows how well you’re doing with this, so a big fat CONGRATS to you! This blog really is amazing, and I enjoy following your recipes (especially the vegan ones.)
And, chocolate. Cooking with chocolate is the best – it’s versatile, exciting, challenging, and surprising.
P.S. Really good choice for the give away prize – I’ve wanted this book forever.
