Over the years, I’ve found that if I don’t have healthy snacks on hand, I will definitely just eat junk. So I’ve been trying to keep better snack options around, and this Homemade Crispy Roasted Edamame is one of my favorites! I’m a sucker for crunchy, salty things, so this delicious edamame is right up my alley, and hopefully yours, too! You can pack it for an afternoon snack or use it as a crispy topping for rice or noodles. I hope you enjoy this protein-packed snack as much as I do!
Why You’ll Love My Crispy Edamame
- Easy to make – This recipe comes together really quickly and only takes about 20 minutes to get perfectly crisp. Once you add all the seasonings, the oven does most of the work.
- Great for snacking – I love having this crispy edamame on hand for easy snacking. It’s packed with protein and will give you a great energy boost if you snack on it throughout the day.
- Packed with flavor – Edamame by itself has a great flavor, but it’s even better when roasted with tamari, sesame oil, garlic, and salt. This is one of those recipes where I could eat the entire batch all by myself!
Why Your Body Will Love This Protein-Packed Snack
Edamame is a great legume to add to your diet! It’s a complete source of plant-based protein, which means it contains all nine essential amino acids the body needs but doesn’t produce by itself.
It’s also packed with fiber, iron, and calcium. People focus a lot on the amount of protein they need but often forget about fiber. Fiber is a really important part of our diets because it keeps things moving smoothly through the digestive system, which reduces the risk of colon cancer or related diseases. It also helps lower bad cholesterol by binding to it in the digestive tract, which prevents its absorption into the bloodstream, making it easier for your body to excrete it.
Crispy Roasted Edamame Recipe Ingredients
- Edamame – You should be able to find frozen, shelled edamame in most grocery stores. Trader Joe’s has both fresh and frozen edamame, and I usually get mine there. This recipe doesn’t work with edamame that is still in the shell.
- Oil – I like using extra virgin olive oil and toasted sesame oil in this recipe. The olive oil helps the edamame get crispy, and the sesame oil adds tons of flavor. You can use any kind of oil you prefer, though.
- Tamari – Tamari is very similar to soy sauce but is richer in flavor and a bit thicker. Most tamari is gluten-free, but soy sauce can also be used.
- Seasonings – I like to season my edamame with granulated garlic and salt. You can certainly add any other seasonings you want, like onion powder, paprika, or dried ginger. If you want a kick to your edamame, you can easily throw in some red pepper flakes for extra heat.
How To Make Homemade Crispy Edamame
- Heat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper (optional). If the edamame is frozen, thaw it.
- I like to gently rinse the edamame in a colander, then pour it onto a clean, dry kitchen towel. Carefully pat the edamame until it’s mostly dry.
- Add the oil (both olive oil and sesame oil), tamari, garlic, salt, and toasted sesame oil. Use your hands to toss everything together until the edamame is completely coated.
- Place in the oven and roast until the edamame is crispy and starting to brown, about 20 minutes. Stir or shake the pan halfway through to ensure the edamame is roasted evenly.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes, and enjoy! Leftover edamame can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
- This recipe is already vegan.
- Make this recipe gluten-free by using a gluten-free tamari or soy sauce.
- How long do leftovers last? If stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, they should last 4-5 days. The edamame can be eaten cold or reheated. The leftovers will not be as crispy, but they will still taste good.
- Does leftover edamame stay crispy? Eating the edamame right out of the oven will give you the crispiest edamame, but it should stay fairly crispy. You can reheat it in the oven or air fryer to ensure its crispiness.
- How much protein is in each serving? The entire recipe has about 14 grams of protein in it.
- Do I need to use olive oil? No, you can use any kind of oil you like. Avocado oil would be a good alternative.
