Why Your Body Will Love This Fruit-Filled Smoothie
Wild blueberries are one of the highest antioxidant-containing fruits. I always talk about antioxidants and can’t say enough great things about them. Antioxidants are present in most brightly colored fruits and vegetables and protect our bodies from damage caused by free radicals and unstable molecules that can increase disease risk.
Blueberry Banana Recipe Ingredients
- Blueberries – Any kind of blueberry can be used for this recipe, but I love using wild blueberries because they have more antioxidants than cultivated blueberries. If you don’t use frozen blueberries, you may want to add a few ice cubes to make your smoothie cold.
- Banana – I used two medium-sized bananas in my smoothie. Mine were fresh, but frozen bananas are a good idea. Bananas help sweeten and thicken the smoothie. If you don’t like bananas, you can add extra yogurt or even applesauce.
- Milk – This smoothie recipe can be made with any type of milk. I used soy milk, which has 8 grams of protein per cup.
- Greek Yogurt – I like to add plain, non-fat Greek yogurt to my smoothies because it adds protein and helps to thicken the mixture. You can use any kind of yogurt you prefer.
- Maple Syrup – Pure maple syrup is an optional ingredient, but it can be used for extra sweetness. You can also use honey or agave syrup.
- Cinnamon – I like to add a pinch of cinnamon for the flavor, and it’s great for your health. Cinnamon is also a spice that goes well with bananas and blueberries.
- Add-Ins – For an extra boost, you can add chia seeds, flax seeds, protein powder, hemp hearts, or anything else you regularly add to your smoothies.

Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
- This recipe is gluten-free.
- Make these smoothies vegan by using dairy-free milk and yogurt.
- Should fresh or frozen blueberries be used? You can use either. I like using frozen blueberries because I have them on hand more often than fresh blueberries, which helps make the smoothies cold.
- Can smoothies be made ahead of time? Smoothies are best when enjoyed immediately after being made, but you can make them, pack them up, and drink them on the go.
- How long do leftovers last? Leftover smoothies don’t usually hold up well in the refrigerator, but they should at least keep their taste for a couple of hours. This smoothie is banana-based, and bananas can turn brown or go bad soon after opening them.
