It’s May! The kids get out of school in just a couple weeks and I’m starting to get excited about summer break. I’m also starting to think about warm-weather recipes, and these Easy BBQ Tofu Sandwiches are definitely on the menu!
Why You’ll Love These Easy BBQ Tofu Sandwiches
- Easy to make – I love these BBQ tofu sandwiches because they come together really quickly and require minimal main ingredients. You’re more than welcome to use a homemade BBQ sauce, but using a good store-bought one saves time.
- Great for the summer – Summer is just around the corner, which means the start of BBQ and picnic season. These tofu sandwiches are great to have around for your plant-based friends.
- Can be made ahead of time – The BBQ tofu mixture can easily be made a couple of days in advance and then just heated up before making it into sandwiches.
BBQ Tofu Sandwich Recipe Ingredients
- Tofu – I like to use super firm tofu for this recipe because I prefer the texture. If you can’t find super-firm, I suggest extra-firm or firm tofu and pressing as much water out of it as you can. I usually use the super-firm tofu from Trader Joe’s, Sprouts or Walmart.
- Tofu Marinade – Before cooking the tofu, I like to coat it with a mixture of oil, soy sauce, corn starch, garlic and paprika. The corn starch helps to make the tofu crispier with less cooking time.
- BBQ Sauce – I wanted to make this recipe really easy, so it just calls for your favorite bottled BBQ sauce. You can definitely make your own sauce, though! I have a homemade sauce that I love and use often in similar recipes.
- Buns – I used regular hamburger buns for this recipe. You can use gluten-free buns or any other type of bread you like. You could also add the tofu into lettuce wraps or salads instead of eating it as a sandwich.
- Coleslaw – Coleslaw is totally optional, but I love adding it to BBQ-inspired sandwiches for some fresh crunch. You could also just add lettuce, tomato, and onion if you prefer.
How To Make A BBQ Tofu Sandwich
- Remove the tofu from the package and press out any excess water, as needed. Cut the block of tofu into small, bite-sized pieces. You can also tear it up into small pieces with your hands.
- In a medium bowl, add the oil, soy sauce, paprika, garlic powder, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk together until the cornstarch has dissolved. Add the diced tofu to the bowl and mix everything together until the tofu is completely coated.
- Heat a large pan over medium heat and spray with cooking spray. Add the tofu and arrange in a single layer. Cook until browned and crispy, 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The tofu will brown faster if you don’t mess with it quite as much.
- Turn the heat off and then add in the BBQ sauce. Stir until the tofu is coated and serve on a bun with some coleslaw, if desired. Enjoy!
Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this recipe vegan? Yes.
- Can this recipe be made gluten-free? Yes, just use gluten-free hamburger buns, and it will be gluten-free.
- How many sandwiches does this recipe make? It makes about 4 sandwiches. I suggest doubling the recipe if you want lots of tofu on each sandwich. That can be done very easily!
- How long do leftovers last? If stored in an airtight container, leftover BBQ tofu should last about 4-5 days. I suggest storing the tofu by itself, rather than inside a bun. The bun may get soggy after a day or so.

Notes
I have a homemade colelsaw recipe here, if interested!
I prefer to use super firm tofu that has been pre-pressed. I love the texture it has and it’s easy to work with. If you can’t find super firm, extra firm will work. Just make sure to press as much liquid out as you can.
