These BBQ Black-Eyed Peas are cozy, flavorful and filling. If you’re looking to add a little extra luck to the new year, you’ll definitely want to make them!
BBQ Black Eyed Peas Recipe Ingredients
- Black-Eyed Peas – I used two cans of black-eyed peas for this recipe. You could also cook your own if you like. Around New Year’s Eve, it can be a little hard to find canned black-eyed peas at the store!
- Homemade BBQ Sauce – I often make this recipe and love it. It’s made using marinara sauce, ketchup, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, Tamari, and lots of warm smoky spices.
- Optional Bowl Ingredients – I served my black-eyed peas with a simple kale salad topped with dried cranberries and pecans. I also added a couple of pieces of cornbread. Polenta or grits would also be great options, as would sautéed kale, collard greens, or Swiss chard.
Why Your Body Will Love This New Year’s Dish
- Digestive Health – Black-eyed peas are actually legumes, meaning they offer an abundance of fiber, which benefits the digestive system, helps fill us up, and keeps our bodies feeling full for longer.
- Blood Sugar Regulation – As mentioned, black-eyed peas are high in fiber, but they’re also a great protein source and have a low glycemic index. This means they digest slowly and don’t cause blood sugar levels to spike or rise too quickly. This makes beans a healthy choice for people with diabetes who need to control their blood sugar levels more.
- Heart Health – Black-eyed peas contain a significant amount of soluble fiber, which helps decrease cholesterol absorption in the bloodstream. Lowering the “bad” cholesterol in the body can greatly reduce the chances of a stroke or heart attack.
How To Make Easy BBQ Black Eyed Pea Bowls
- Start by heating a large pan over medium heat and add two teaspoons of olive oil and the onions. Cook for 2-3 minutes until onions are soft, then add garlic. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- Add the marinara sauce and all remaining ingredients, excluding the black-eyed peas. Stir until sauce is combined and cook for 3-5 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
- Next, add in the black-eyed peas, mix everything together, and let cook another 2-3 minutes. Cover until ready to eat. Enjoy it as a side dish or in a bowl like I did.
- Make some cozy bowls if desired: To a single-serve bowl, add a big spoonful of the BBQ black-eyed peas, some kale salad or cooked veggies, and then a couple of pieces of cornbread or a spoonful of polenta or grits.

This was great! I’ve been trying to find a BBQ black eyed peas recipe for years because my husband can’t eat navy beans (high oxalates). I’ve tried a lot of duds, but I’m happy to have finally found a winner! I used leftover homemade pasta sauce that I had in the fridge. We all really liked it. Thanks!
