BBQ Black Eyed Peas Recipe Ingredients
- Black Eyed Peas – I used two cans of black eyed peas for this recipe. You could also cook your own if you like. Around New Year’s Eve it can be a little hard to find canned black eyed peas at the store!
- Homemade BBQ Sauce – I use this recipe all the time and I love it. It’s made using marinara sauce, ketchup, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, Tamari and lots of warm smoky spices.
- Optional Bowl Ingredients – I served my black eyed peas with a simple kale salad topped with dried cranberries and pecans. I also added a couple pieces of cornbread. Polenta or grits would also be great options, as well as sautéed kale, collard greens or Swiss chard.
How To Make Easy BBQ Black Eyed Pea Bowls
- Start by heating a large pan over medium heat and adding two teaspoons olive oil and the onions. Cook for 2-3 minutes until onions are soft and then add in garlic. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- Add in the marinara sauce and all remaining ingredients, excluding the black eyed peas. Stir until sauce is combined and let cook for 3-5 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
- Next, add in the black eyed peas, mix everything together and let cook another 2-3 minutes. Cover until ready to eat. Enjoy as a side dish or in a bowl like I did.
- Make some cozy bowls if desired: To a single serve bowl, add a big spoonful of the BBQ black eyed peas, some kale salad or cooked veggies and then a couple pieces of cornbread or a spoonful of polenta or grits.

- Is this recipe gluten free? The cornbread that I used was not gluten free but you could easily make your bowls gluten free.
- Can I make this with a different kind of beans? Yes, you can use any kind of bean you like! I’m mainly using black eyed peas because this is a New Year’s recipe.
- Can these BBQ black eyed peas be frozen? Yes, freeze in an airtight container, ziplock works great, for up to 6 months. Thaw in microwave, in a pot or let sit on the counter.
- How long will leftovers keep in the refrigerator? About 4 days when stored in an airtight container.

- 2 teaspoons olive oil, or oil of choice
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 teaspoons tamari, or soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- 3/4 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
