Sautéed Swiss Chard Recipe Ingredients
- Swiss Chard – If you have swiss chard growing in your garden, this is a great way to use it. If not, you should be able to find it at most grocery stores and farmer’s markets this time of year. This recipe could also be made using another dark leafy green like spinach or kale, if preferred.
- Olive Oil – I like cooking my greens in olive oil because I enjoy the taste, but you can use whichever type of oil you normally use. You could also just cook it in water if you prefer not to use oil.
- Onion – The onion is totally optional, but it adds a little sweetness and always goes well with cooked greens. I used yellow onion but any kind of onion will work.
- Garlic – I love fresh garlic, and tend to use a lot when sautéing greens, so feel free to add as much, or as little as you like. Garlic powder could also be used if you prefer a less strong garlic flavor.
- Lemon Juice – I like to add a little bit of lemon juice in at the end. It adds brightness to the greens. Again, add as much or as little as you like.
- Salt and Pepper – You don’t need many other seasonings other than salt and pepper for this swiss chard recipe. I recommend using freshly cracked black pepper, if you have it on hand. Red pepper flakes can also be added for heat.
How To Make Easy Sautéed Swiss Chard
- Wash and gently dry your swiss chard. The stems are edible, so you can cut them off and then thinly slice them together. Then, chop the swiss chard leaves into bite sized pieces. Keep chopped stems and leaves separate.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once oil is hot, add the stems and the onion and cook for about 1 minute.
- Next, add in the swiss chard leaves, salt and pepper. Cook until swiss chard leaves are wilted and to your desired doneness, 1-2 minutes but can be cooked longer if you prefer. Turn the heat off, squeeze in the fresh lemon juice and enjoy!
