I’m so excited to share this Homemade Apple Pie Spice Recipe with you all today! I created this recipe years ago but had yet to publish it here. I made it again recently and am enjoying using it so much that I just had to share it. What sets this apple pie spice recipe apart is that it’s made using real apples that have been dried and then blended, so it’s packed with delicious apple flavor!
This idea came to me a few years ago after I made a strawberry frosting recipe using ground-up freeze-dried strawberries. It was so good and had so much fresh strawberry flavor that I wanted to try it with apples. It worked out great and can be added to buttercream frosting, like dried strawberries.
Why You’ll Love This Homemade Apple Pie Spice
- It’s made with real apples – This pie spice is primarily made with dried apple chips that are blended into a powder and mixed with a few other spices. S, it isn’t just a spice mix made with spices that you would add to apple pie. It’s made with actual apples and has such a great flavor!
- This spice mixture is super versatile – You can get as creative as you like with this apple pie spice recipe and use it however you want. I’ve used it as a topper for cinnamon sugar apple toast, but you can also mix it into oatmeal, hot chocolate, muffin batter, and so much more!
- It’s easy to make – All you have to do to make this amazing spice blend is add the dried apples to a high-powered blender and blend until they turn into a powder. Next, add the powder to a bowl and mix in some cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
Apple Pie Spice Recipe Ingredients
- Baked Apple Chips – For this recipe, make sure to buy dried or dehydrated apple chips. Freeze-dried apples are slightly different and have a much different texture than the baked apple chips. I used these fuji and red apple chips from the Bare company, which worked great. They have a nice, sweet apple taste. I’m sure there are other brands of apple chips out there; just try to find one that only uses apples and no weird added ingredients.
- Cinnamon – Apples and cinnamon go together so well and are especially perfect for fall sweet treats. You can use the apple spice without adding anything else, but cinnamon adds just a little extra, which I love.
- Nutmeg and Cloves – I also added a bit of nutmeg and cloves because those are flavors that traditionally go into an apple pie recipe. You can add as much or as little of these spices as you like. You could also add some ground ginger.
How To Make The Best Apple Pie Spice Recipe
- Open your bag of dried apples and add them all to a high-powered blender. You can probably use a food processor for this recipe, but it may not ground the apples into a fine powder quite like a Vitamix blender or something similar.
- Turn the blender on low and slowly increase the speed to high. It should take about 30 seconds or so to completely blend the apples into a fine powder. You will want to use a top on the blender because blending the dried apples will produce many small pieces, kind of like dust. Once the blender is turned off, let everything settle for a minute or so before removing the lid.
- Next, pour the apple spice mixture into a jar or bowl. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves and mix well until everything is combined. You can use this apple pie spice immediately or store it in an airtight container for about six weeks.
- The apple mixture will clump together naturally, so if you’ve been storing it for a little while, you’ll probably need to give it a good mix before using it. After mixing, the clumps should easily break apart and form a powdery spice blend again. Just make sure you store it in an airtight container. If you’re really having issues with the clumping, add it back to the blender and blend it for a few seconds.
Apple-Cinnamon Spice Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
- This recipe is both vegan and gluten-free.
- What kind of apples should be used? I highly recommend the exact ones (pictures above) that I used. They had great flavor and blended up really well. Any kind of apple chips should work, though. Just try to make sure “apples” are the only ingredients listed on the bag. You can also use homemade apple chips if you make your own.
- What does this apple pie spice taste like? It tastes like real apples! It has a strong, sweet apple taste that can be used by itself or you can add a few spices to it. I like to use cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves for some warm fall flavor.
- How should this apple spice be used? It can be used in many different ways. I have added it to hot chocolate, oatmeal, muffin batter, and cinnamon sugar toast. My kids like apples but, for some reason, don’t like having actual apple pieces in their baked goods, so I just add a couple of tablespoons of this spice mixture in, along with some applesauce, and they taste amazing.
- How long does this homemade spice mixture last? This apple pie spice tends to clump together, but if stored in an air-tight container in the cupboard, it should stay good for about 6 weeks. You can crush the clumps using a spoon or even add them back to a blender if needed.
