What Are Smash Burgers?
A smash burger is a burger that’s smashed while cooking in order to create a thinner, crispier patty. Two patties are served on a burger bun with a slice or two of cheese melted between them.
These Black Bean Smash Burgers are my version of a vegetarian smash burger. They’re made using a black bean and quinoa mixture, so they don’t get quite as crispy as a regular beef patty. They’re delicious and fun to eat all the same!
Black Bean Smash Burger Recipe Ingredients
- Quinoa – My black bean burger recipe calls for cooked quinoa. You can use the cooked quinoa warm or chilled. Brown rice can be substituted if desired.
- Black Beans – I used one can of black beans for this recipe. These are black bean burgers, but most other types of beans will work in their place.
- Bread Crumbs – I used panko, but you can also use regular bread crumbs or crushed crackers.
- Salsa – I like to use a chunky salsa recipe for these burgers. I usually use a chunky black bean and corn salsa because it adds a few more elements.
- Spices – These burgers are seasoned with cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Feel free to go as heavy on the seasonings as you like.
- Cheese – I used a slice of cheddar cheese. You can use as much cheese as you like, or another kind you prefer.
- Hamburger Buns – Use your favorite hamburger buns or two crunchy lettuce leaves if you want to lower the carbs.
- Toppings – I topped my burgers with ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and avocado. Use whatever toppings you like!
How To Make Black Bean Smash Burgers
- Add cooked quinoa, black beans, bread crumbs, salsa, spices, and salt to a food processor. Blend until a partly chunky, partly smooth mixture is formed. If it’s too much of a paste, the burgers will be on the mushier side, and you want them to hold together well.
- Add the burger mixture to a medium bowl and mix well. You can chill the mixture for up to four days or make the patties immediately. This recipe should make enough for about eight thin patties, making four burgers in total.
- Form the burger mixture into eight thin patties. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a couple of teaspoons of olive oil. Once hot, place the burger patties into the pan and use a spatula to press them down. Cook until each side is browned and crispy, 5-7 minutes each side. Melt a slice of cheese onto four of the patties.
- Assemble your burgers: Lay down your bottom piece of bun and top with any toppings you desire. Next, gently place the patty with the melted cheese down and top with a second burger patty. Top with any other toppings you like and place the second piece of bun on the top.
Black Bean Veggie Burger Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
- Are these veggie burgers gluten-free? No, I used regular bread crumbs and a regular bun for my burgers, but you can easily make them gluten-free by using gluten-free ingredients.
- Are these smash burgers vegan? The burger patty is vegan, but the cheese I used on my burger is not. You can easily use vegan cheese in this recipe.
- What is the texture of the black bean burgers? They are more on the soft side but are not dry and crumbly. If you want the patties to be super crispy, fry them in a Tablespoon or so of oil until each side is crispy.
- How long do leftovers last in the refrigerator? The black bean burger mixture will last about four days in the refrigerator. It can also be frozen for up to three months.
