These 20-Minute BBQ Black Bean Tacos are easy to make and so delicious. They’re perfect for a family weeknight dinner.
It doesn’t get much better than 20-minute tacos! These quick and easy BBQ Black Bean Tacos are so flavorful and delicious that I have a feeling they might be your new favorite weeknight dinner.
I first made this homemade BBQ sauce when I published my Vegetarian Sloppy Joe recipe a few years ago, and I’ve been making it ever since. It’s not a super traditional BBQ sauce, but it’s one of my favorites, and I love pairing it with beans.
Late in my pregnancy, I’ve been craving (vegetarian) sloppy joes. The last time I made them, I added some black beans to the BBQ sauce and threw them in some tacos. It’s been one of my best ideas lately! 🙂 I also love that this recipe only takes 20 minutes because, these days, it’s getting harder and harder to stand in the kitchen for any longer than that.
Black Bean BBQ Taco Recipe Ingredients
- Beans – I used three (15-ounce) cans of black beans, drained and rinsed, or about 4 1/2 cups.
- Corn or flour tortillas – Use whichever you prefer; I went with corn.
- Spices – I used smoked paprika, mustard powder, chili powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. I added more cumin than usual to this version of my BBQ sauce to give it a little more Mexican/Taco flavor, and it turned out so delicious!
- Optional toppings – Avocado, cabbage, carrot, cilantro, hot sauce, etc.
- Onion and garlic
- Tomato sauce and ketchup
- Pure maple syrup
- Apple cider vinegar
- Tamari
- Olive oil
Why Your Body Will Love These Black Bean BBQ Tacos
- Digestive Health – Beans are high in insoluble fiber, which helps bulk up the digestive system and prevent constipation. The fiber in beans also acts as a prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria in the large intestine and carries out toxins in the system.
- Heart Health – Beans contain a significant amount of soluble fiber, which helps decrease cholesterol absorption in the bloodstream. Lowering the “bad” cholesterol in the body can greatly reduce the chances of a stroke or heart attack.
- Blood Sugar Regulation – Beans are high in fiber and protein, giving them a low glycemic index. This means they digest slowly and don’t cause blood sugar levels to spike or rise too quickly. This makes beans a healthy choice for people with diabetes who need to control their blood sugar levels more.
How To Make These Easy BBQ Tacos
I must admit I didn’t share any of these tacos with my husband and ate them for three days straight, all by myself. 🙂 They’re seriously that good!
- Heat a large pan over medium heat and add olive oil and onion. Cook until softened, 2-3 minutes, then add garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- Next, add all the remaining ingredients except for the black beans. Mix the sauce together and cook for a minute or two. Add the black beans, stir until they’re all coated, and cook for about 10 minutes until heated through and flavors have developed.
- Use about 1/3 cup of black beans for each taco and top with desired toppings.
20-Minute BBQ Black Bean Tacos Recipe Tips
- You can top your tacos with anything you like! I decided to go with a BBQ theme and topped mine with crunchy cabbage and carrots. I also added avocado because why not?!
- The BBQ Black Bean filling can be made up to two days in advance and just reheated when you’re ready to use it.
- The filling can also be frozen for up to three months.
- Other delicious uses for these BBQ Black Beans include chip-dipping, throwing them onto a taco salad, or enjoying them as a side dish like baked beans. I’m not sure if it’s just my pregnancy cravings, but I find them seriously addicting and am thinking I need to make another batch to stock the freezer with for after the baby comes.

So delicious! Thank you! My husband who is not vegetarian loved them! It is a great go to meal we really enjoy.
So glad to hear! One of my favorites 🙂
Do you think it would taste ok with red or pink beans?
Thank you!
Very good recipe. Easy and different. The leftovers could make a great bowl meal or wrap. Thanks for this!
I love that idea! So glad you liked it!
These are so delicious and easy! They actually did only take 20 minutes (which I find is rarely the case when recipes claim this..) My whole family loved them, as did my parents when I passed on the recipe. Looking forward to trying other recipes from your blog!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you and your family enjoyed them! 🙂
These are delicious and keep very well. I made exactly as you directed except that I didn’t have the apple cider vinegar, and I didn’t miss it. YUM YUM. It makes a lot, and I have had it warmed over 3 times and still like it, which is saying something. I will definitely make this again.
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed them! It’s one of my favorite recipes! 🙂
